Tawi-tawi Province – DSWD XII in coordination with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) recently organized a significant activity called “Kamustahan” in Tawi-tawi Province, Basilan and Jolo, Sulu under the leadership of DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian.
Present during the Kamustahan were Usec Allan Tanjusay, Asec Arnel Garcia, DRMG Asst. Bureau Dir Rey Martija, and DSWD XII Dir Loreto Cabaya Jr.
This initiative is a crucial part of the government’s broader efforts towards peace and reconciliation, highlighting the importance of social reintegration and normalization.
Over 1,000 decommissioned combatants took part in these meaningful conversations, where they were interviewed by compassionate social workers and dedicated project development officers. The main goal of “Kamustahan” was to provide a safe space for combatants to openly share their experiences, concerns, and aspirations, ultimately fostering healing and understanding.
According to DSWD XII Dir. Loreto Cabaya Jr., “We believe in the power of dialogue and support to rebuild lives and communities. This re-engagement activity is a testament to our unwavering commitment to peace and social progress.”
The comprehensive program encompassed discussions on various aspects of the combatants’ lives, including their well-being, livelihood opportunities, and access to social services. Through these conversations, the DSWD aims to develop tailored support programs that will contribute to the overall success of decommissioned combatants as they fully transition to civilian life.
